Social Media Etiquettes that you should not Ignore

So, you are entrusted with the responsibility to spearheading a social media marketing campaign. Um, how on earth you are supposed to do it?

Should you go after the Likes or Retweets that your boss believes by heart is the only way to measure the outcome of a social media marketing campaign? But as things stand, it is not that easy to get thousand of Likes or Retweet unless the posts are highly interesting and innovative.

So, what you are supposed to do? Yeah, I know it is tempting to jump into the bandwagon of some spamming tools to get thousands of Likes and retweets in a matter of one hour. Please don’t be a stupid, as this will shorten your social media life span by inviting a penalty.

There are some etiquettes involved that you should never ever neglect when you are entrusted with the responsibility of promoting your website in a natural way in social media platform. Let me explain the etiquettes one by one.

Social Media Etiquettes

Do Not Take Anyone For Granted: Yes, you should treat Facebook or twitter users as a tool to promote your service. You should not badger their life by repeatedly asking them to like your post or share something with their friends.

This is not going to work. People hang around in Facebook with the hope of chilling out and that means, you should not bombard their peaceful lives with your noble responsibility of promoting your service.

Social media concept

Show Respect: Try to treat the users as friends and not fans and that means, you should try your level best to talk with respect. That means, you should not order them to do this or that rather you should request them and do not forget to reciprocate their love.

I have come across some profiles that seem to take fans for granted. This is sickening and if you do not change this mentality, you are sure to see your social media campaign failing to rise up to expectation.

Indulge in usual chitchat, have some fun, share something funny and you will see that people are communicating with you and this will result in better visibility online.

Reciprocate: Social media marketing cannot be one sided. You cannot expect that people will be commenting, sharing and retweeting your posts without getting any kind of attention from your side.

However, I am not asking you retweet other posts randomly but you should at least say Thank to the person who shares your post with his friends and thereby adding more value to it in all possible ways.

Say What You Mean and the other Way Round: It means, you should stand firm on what you said. Rather than going round and round, you should come clean on it.

For example, if you commit someone that you will be looking into the matter, you should do that no matter how much the work press is.

Please Do Not Spam: I know the temptation is hard to overcome, but you need to make it a point that you do not succumb to it.

Do not post unwarranted links on another person’s profile and try to be friends with others rather than working with the sole objective to drive some visitors from there.

These Social Media Etiquette can bring a success for your marketing campaign, use them to your advantage.

  1. Unfortunately i ignored many things related to social media. To be honest, i didn’t respected your tips above and that’s not ok. I am aware that I look at things differently from now on.

  2. Social Media is great way to reach people with the same interest and market your business however it is important to maximize this benefit in proper way. Customer engagement should be present, building relationship through participating in a discussion with relevancy is one key.

  3. Social media etiquette is a facet of proper online behavior that we must never take for granted. I was given the opportunity to manage a fan page on facebook and it was a very enlightening experience, customer engagement is a very critical factor in the entire process– as much as possible, I make it a point to answer all their questions and interact with them as much as I can. Many thanks and more power!

  4. Hi Michael, thanks for the salutary post. The pointers you mentioned here are most definitely critical and should be considered by those who have the tendency to act inappropriately online. Respect is of utmost importance in establishing harmonious relationships. I highly believe that the rampant display of arrogance online can definitely tarnish one’s credibility.

  5. “Do Not Take Anyone For Granted”

I like this, because i always treat my friends on social network the way i treat my relations . That is a perfect way to make your business more effective . Thanks for the tips

  6. Great tips Mike, I believe one should not overuse the same response. It can get very boring when all a brand does is reply ‘thanks’ everything. The brands that stand out the most to me are the ones that put value and personality into their social media accounts.

  7. “Do not Spam”. Simple etiquette that most onliner ignores and they not realize
that it is the first rule in the internet.

  8. “Do not Spam” is all it takes to make twitter more profitable and easier to work on. I have been recently seeing stupid number of fake accounts with auto relies and welcome messages. I don’t understand what benefit those guys get from such lazy work?

  9. Hi Michael,

Freinds not Fan, I like it.

Building relationships is something I am fond off, overall we are better placed to become more liked and improve our readership. I don’t like people that just spam offers of what not everyday, that’s an easy way of turning people away.

    Nice points.

    • @ Simmeon – yes I always believe in building relationship .. having friends is far better than having fan followers because true friends always stand by you
